MUSIC FACTORY PROGRAMS

Morley
Morley School
Providing musical experiences including the donation of instruments, financial support for music lessons, studio involvement and the involvement of musically talented RCMP officers and youth as mentors are the primary offerings of our Music Factory Programs, currently funded in part by the Alberta Safe Communities Initiative. This progam is designed to enrich the lives of vulnerable (at risk) youth, so that they may experience success, improve self-esteem, build confidence, develop team work and other job related skills, and ultimately break the cycle of dysfunctional behaviour, poverty and unemployment, including gang related and criminal behaviour.

Programming is offered in existing community facilities right in the heart of where children, youth and families live by partnering with like-minded individuals and organizations that bring skill, talent and resources that enrich the programming.

By embracing youth culture we are able to reach out to vulnerable children and youth in a manner that will direct/redirect them toward character development, education and fruitful career opportunities. Today, youth culture influences every facet of entertainment and popular music. This is the platform that will draw hard to reach youth to the Music Factory Programs – a platform built primarily on accepted, youth centered culture.

Youth demonstrating commitment and showing promise are engaged in the studio component of our programs where they can make professional recordings under the watchful eye(s) of professional music and learn about career opportunities that are available to them.

Recording Element of the Gift of Music Program at Morley

The digital age has brought the recording world technology within the reach of just about everyone. Inexpensive software and hardware are comparable in quality to what would have cost thousands of dollars only a few short years ago.

The processes of writing, editing, recording, mixing and mastering a final product, however, have not changed. In fact, the increase of players, producers and technicians  has made the field more competitive in many areas. The goal, therefore, of the recording program is to introduce students and invite them to “get their feet wet” in all the different aspects of this exciting field of work.

We are starting off with learning the importance of being a good musician: the “tape” picks up everything. The good and the bad, so students quickly realize that good playing is a very important part of making a good recording. Writing good songs is the art of communicating effectively through the use of words and music. To accomplish this, students are instructed in the use of language skills in writing good lyrics as well as the use of musical skills to add impact to the lyrics.

The actual process of recording is very intimidating at first (even for seasoned musicians), so getting comfortable playing and listening back to yourself recording is a first priority. Once a student realizes that the technology is there to help them get their best efforts recorded, they will start to feel comfortable and then creative while putting down “tracks”.

Once we have tracks recorded, mixing and mastering will produce finished songs that can be unleashed on the world! As a final cog in the musical machine wheel, students will have the opportunity to try their hand at being a DJ - producing a mock (possibly real) radio show to “air” the recordings that we produce!

There are many stages of learning in the process, but all are fun and have a creative outlet for many different artistic disciplines. At Morley, we hope to explore as many as we can in a supportive, learning environment.
